Broadway Babies

Life at home was hard
Broadway Babies
Hard as it comes
He came often

Barely twelve or thirteen
Out on the streets to seek fortunes
Knowing you had learned
An invaluable trade at home

You earn your livings daily
On your backs, on your knees
A parade of faceless, slobbering men, pay well
You with nothing but spare change left to show

Yes life at home was hard Broadway Babies
The sharpened tip of what was out there
Yet to come
Life on the streets

Momentarily lost Broadway Babies—
To families who taught you well
Their loss is great
While you pay with your souls
