The Leavetaking

Iona and Juri scanned the battlefield that, moments ago, they had witnessed the death of Morgan on.

"Are you sure that they are as big of a threat as the rest believe? That battle was probably the most poorly executed that I have seen in a long time." Iona pondered.

"They have killed a great many of us and we only stand on this council because of them. Had they not killed our predecessors, we still would be as we were, just alternates." Juri slowly flapped his wings, staring at Iona. "Besides, they still won."

"It was the way it was supposed to be. We all but handed them the executioners axe. She had no orb. Her death would have been in seconds had they but turned theirs on. But I do not understand why the council wanted her dead." Iona, looked down at the snow.

"She outlived her usefulness, to quote Sorcha." Juri replied.

"One wonders when we will outlive our usefulness."

"Maybe someday, but that day is not today. Today, we must go and leave the world, for now, in Lazlo's hands. Callas will step down tonight as it is foretold." Juri says.

"How dangerous do you think this will be?" Iona asked.

"Very, but that is the reason that we are going in force. To minimize the risk."

"Is Tennant going?"

"No, he stays, his powers are growing too quickly. I think that even Sorcha begins to fear him. He will rest for now and help Lazlo if needed. But Lazlo should be able to keep them occupied for the time being." Juri replied.

"Tarn?" Iona asked.

"His restoration is nearly complete. It has left some very telltale marks on him but he will recover, maybe not fully but enough to still be useful. He may or may not join us. It is only a little while, Iona. A week or a month at the most but if we can do what Sorcha says. Think of the possibilities. Think of all that we have to gain."

The gate opened behind them. Sorcha, black-haired and powerful walked from the mist. She swept the sight of the field and turned to Juri, "She is dead?"

"Yes Lady, very. Gaviao swung the final blow."

"And my stepdaughter?"

"Dead, but restored."

"Good. I wish to save that particular pleasure for myself. It is time to go."
