Gavião's letters, 1/8/1348

Dear Sir Sigurd, Commander Jainus, Sir Maxime:

I have decided on naming my successors, should I die in battle. I must not dally further in this duty, as I believe this possibility grows increasingly likelier by the day. I also warn you all that upon accepting this appointment to succession, your own risk is increased. However, in these dark times, I fear all of us, involved or ignorant are all in grave danger. I name as my second, Sir Sigurd. I name as my 3rd, Jainus, of Denmark. I name as my 4th Maxime of The Clan of Claw, Russia. This means that, upon your acceptance, I shall announce this to the Council of Epona’s Temple. If something should happen that Sigurd cannot take my place, Jainus will assume it, if neither are able, Maxime will do so. I know that none of you know each other, but I ask that you trust to my judgment in this matter. All of you are extremely capable warriors, leaders and full of the kind of honor and integrity this battle demands. Though you all come from different backgrounds that might lead to prejudicial thinking about one another, I ask that you look beyond this, make an effort to get to know each other, even if just through letters. You will need to trust each other fully if we are to survive and succeed. All three of you have already lost loved ones in this epic battle, and I know your hearts would have it that their deaths make a serious difference. On this and more, I base my complete confidence in all three of you.

Please give me your answers as soon as possible, and I will convey the matter to Elata, Acting Head Mistress.

In other matters, I would like to begin three projects.

Maxime: Please recruit as many of your tribe of dragons as possible who are willing to train under Peter, Head Master of Russia. I would like a few days of training in combat with the Knights there in human form to allow the two forces to build respect and trust for each other, and to educate the dragons as to the ways of the order. When you deem them ready, I would like you and the Head Knight there to select those best suited for it and create a dragon and rider flying battle squad. I would like to be part of this, with you as my partner dragon if possible. I would like to train one on one with you. I will come to you in Russia if I can put out fires here long enough to do so. I would like to train with the squad. If this cannot be arranged, perhaps you and a few of the most promising recruits can come to me. We will figure this out as time passes. Please select only those dragons and knights who are willing and eager for this mission, we do not need strife in the elite force. I believe it will turn the tide of battle for us at some important point.

Two: Sir Sigurd, please increase the level of body guards for Elata. I know that you have undertook this yourself, as I had before for Callas. However, our leaders seem to be targeted more and more often. If Elata has family she cars for, it might be wise to move them or at least warn them to beware of harm as well. Callas family of origin has been virtually eliminated during this war. Our enemies have no sense of honor or the established rules of warfare. The same may be said for all the Head Masters and Knight Protectors and their families. The Enemy may try to harm them, or black mail our otherwise devout and loyal members in to acts of betrayal. We do not want anyone to have to face these choices. Sir Sigurd, I also want you to know I have heard you on the matter of ship wrecks and intend to investigate personally.

Three: Jainus

I would like your counsel in some matters that have cropped up with the enemy lately. You have special insight into their machinations, or into what they were like a matter of months ago anyway. I would like to discuss tactics with you. Would it be possible to meet with you sometime soon to discuss my ideas in person? I don’t believe having these delicate matters written in missives would be advisable.

Thank you, my trusted fellow leaders. Together we shall prevail.

Letter written after investigation of ship wrecks:

Dear Sir Sigurd:
I and my squad have investigated the ship wrecks you reported. We found the cause to be Dushela, our Enemy most responsible for the creation and dissemination of The Plague who was causing it. We have taken some actions that we believe will alleviate this problem henceforth. I hope this missive finds you and Lady Elata well. I will explain in more detail next time we meet in person.

Seraphim
Priest of Tefnut
Cairo Egypt

I write you, Seraphim, on behalf of the Lady Roxana Seville, who you formerly knew in most affectionate terms as M. I met her today, in the course of investigating matters related to the Lady’s mother. She heard from our group that you were no longer in service to that Daunting Force, and begs to join you in person. She told me, privately, of how you were her only good friend, and eventually greatest love when she was forced to aid her mother in her works of evil. How you told her of the Gods, and brought her texts which eventually led her to turn to the worship of our own Strawberon and eventual withdrawal from her mother’s schemes. As you know, she changes her identity and moves every 20 years. The time approaches now, and has been hastened by recent acts by my squad that might bring attention to the area she’s been residing in. She wishes to join you in Egypt. For your companionship, shared scholarship, and she hopes, still your love. I told her I could not reveal your location, but that I would send you a letter on her behalf, and you could contact her in this matter. I realize that this matter is not my concern or business, but ask you, as a favor between gentleman, that if you indeed are in love with Roxana, that you please relay your change of status to Tamsin the Silver, to allow her to also get on with her interrupted life. Again, I know this is not my business, but I have grown fond of Tamsin in the short time I have known her, and feel as an uncle might toward her. I would appreciate it if this matter where disclosed by you, thus not leaving me in possession of secretive and awkward knowledge against someone I fight alongside and eat alongside daily.

My greatest wishes for your renewed life, continued safety, happiness and well-being.

Sincerely,
Gavião Nobre
